Computer Science Requirements & Standards in Iowa
Computer Science Requirements for Iowa Districts
In June 2020, the Future Ready Iowa Act (House File 2629) was signed into law and includes requirements and timelines for computer science planning and instruction. Requirements are due in two phases:
Phase 1 due 2022:
By July 1, 2022: All public and non public districts develop & implement a K-12 computer science plan.
Starting July 2022: High schools must offer one-half unit of computer science beginning. The course may be offered online.
Phase 2 due 2023:
Starting July 2023: Provide computer science instruction aligned to the standards in at least one grade level from 1st to 6th.
Starting July 2023: Provide computer science instruction aligned to the standards in at least one grade level from 7th to 8th.
Computer Science Standards for Students
The Iowa State Board of Education approved and adopted the CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards in June 2018.

Standards for Computer Science Teachers
The Computer Science Teacher Association (CSTA) in partnership with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) revised the standards for computer science teachers in 2019 and released the most recent version in 2020.
The purpose is to provide clear guidance around effective and equitable CS instruction ins support of rigorous CS education for all K-12 students. You can learn more about the standards for CS teachers here.
